Kirkoswald is a frequent winner of the Cumbrian Best
Kept Village and Cumbria in Bloom competitons.
Its main street runs from the small bridge over the
Raven beck, flanked by red sandstone houses and
partially cobbled footpaths and market square.
The village derives its name from the church of
St Oswald (left) which unusually has its bell tower on top of the hill behind the church, originally, it is thought, to warn villagers of invading Scots.
A short walk around the corner from the church are the
ruins of Kirkoswald Castle (right), only the tower remains,
but the moat and outline of the castle can be seen.
Kirkoswald has its own village store and two pubs both
serving meals, The Fetherston Arms (01768 898284) and
The Crown Inn, which has been highly recommended by
previous visitors (01768 898435) booking is essential for
weekends.
