There are a number of lovely walks starting from Hazel Cottage. Take a stroll up the common (left outside cottage) along the Raven Beck or for a longer walk try following the footpath along the River Eden to Lacy caves and further to Long Meg stone circle. A mile from Kirkoswald over the River Eden is Lazonby which has a heated outdoor swimming pool open from late May until the end of August. Lazonby also has a recently extended Co-op store and a train station on the picturesque Carlisle to Settle line (pay on the train). Time tables available at the cottage.

The market town of Penrith is 15 minutes from Hazel Cottage. Market day is Tuesday. As well as the usual high street stores there are a couple of larger supermarkets and a number of more locally owned businesses giving the town a more unique feel. Penrith also has its own recently extended leisure centre with a swimming pool, climbing wall and fitness centre amongst other facilities.
